The 'Trapped' image
I chose this particular image because this image exemplifies the African Americans in the novel being trapped by the racial injustice.
Significance to the Theme and the Novel
This image portrays a feeling of being trapped in by something, and since this particular something will not let you out, it is a form of injustice. The injustice being portrayed by this particular image is being trapped by the societal expectations and laws. Grant feels that he is being cornered in by the unjust practices of the white peoples, "they sentence you to death because you were at the wrong place at the wrong time, with no proof that you had done the crime other then being there when it happened" (pg 158) Grant is frustrated by the way the whites treat the black peoples. The superiority of the white peoples, and inferiority of the black peoples mentality makes Grant feel as if he cannot possibly help make a change in the unjust society. This cornered feeling due to unjust situations or circumstances is the relationship between the novel and the image.
