Jesus Christ
I have chosen Jesus Christ because he represents the allusions between the novel and the theme. In the novel there are frequent allusions to Jesus Christ, some of these allusions to Jesus Christ include the injustice of the African Americans.
History
Jesus Christ is the son of GOD according to the Christian belief. Jesus Christ was born to the house of Mary and Joseph. He is the central figure in Christianity.
Significance to the theme
Jesus Christ was a man who went through torture, pain and suffering. This was unjust according to both the Christian's belief, and others. It is unjust to kill someone simply because of what they believe in. The injustice done to Jesus Christ was horrible as it included mockery, being spat on, a crown of thorns were placed on his head, nails were driven through his hands and feet and a spear was driven through his side. All these actions of torture to Jesus Christ shows how the people will torture someone because they believe that another person is a threat to their authority or race. This was the case with Jesus Christ.
Allusion to the Novel and the Theme
In the novel, Gaines displays Jefferson as a Christ like figure. In the novel there is discussion where the execution's date was being pushed after Christmas and Easter because it would not be ethical. Jefferson's death plays a role of being a sacrifice to help end the belief that most blacks were something better than the opinion they held of Jefferson. Jefferson becomes more silent towards his execution/ crucifixion, offering his life even though he is innocent. This is similar to what Jesus Christ had to go through, he was silent and did not say anything, he went to his death even though he had not done anything. This allusion to the Jesus suggests that the wrong doings being done to Jefferson will one day redeem itself, similar to what happened for Jesus. Like how Jesus accepted his sacrificial death without a word, Jefferson also does the same by not showing his emotions to others. The allusions to the Messiah are many in this novel, and they represent the theme of injustice where the society does not care whether a person may be innocent or not. All that matters is whether the efforts of one individual will be redeemed in the future.
